Plastic Pallet – Carbon Footprint Survey

Midlands based specialist company, PPS Equipment Management Ltd has just commissioned a survey to measure the carbon footprint of their plastic pallets operations.

For years, PPS has been managing a considerable fleet of plastic pallets on behalf of its customers – these are largely in the food industry where the use of plastic pallets has been steadily growing over the past number of years.

However by far the largest percentage of pallets used today is timber. However, PPS in their efforts to promote plastic pallets has initiated a programme showing the favourable carbon footprint of plastic pallets, particularly in the food sector.

This survey, due for completion in June this year will show the positive uses of plastic pallets and that versus timber, plastic pallets show a better overall carbon footprint. The primary reason is that plastic pallets are expected to have a considerably longer life cycle than those made of wood. Plastic pallets in a typical pooling system, as operated by PPS may have an active life of up to 10 years or even more.

PPS does recycle its plastic pallets and is continually refreshing its pool of plastic pallets and other returnable transit equipment.

The carbon footprint report for plastic pallets will also include a report on returnable plastic food crates.

Collapsible Plastic Pallet Boxes

As part of their ongoing commitment to extend their range of returnable transit equipment (RTE), PPS Equipment Management Ltd, based in Measham in the Midlands, is now promoting a range of plastic pallets boxes.

New Use for Plastic Pallet Boxes

A number of sales to a Midlands-based engineering company have been made for plastic pallet boxes – and for an unusual application!
Plastic pallet boxes are a regular staple of sales for some distribution companies, based in Measham in the Midlands. The core business of the parent company is the management of returnable transit equipment (RTE) and the Measham site houses a state-of-the-art industrial wash plant. Plastic crates, tote boxes and plastic pallets are all washed to the highest of standards, and the company was accredited to ISO 22000 earlier this year.
And while the company continues to grow in the provision of services, the direct sales arm, continues to thrive due largely to a newly focused sales effort. As well as existing product lines the company has recently been very active in purchasing stocks of second hand equipment such as metal roll cages or large plastic pallet boxes. This stock is sourced throughout the UK and may be from bankrupt stock, excess capacity or in conjunction with receivers.
An interesting application for used plastic pallet boxes was recently realised. The owner of an engineering company in Burton-on-Trent wished to send a number of personal artefacts to his home in Southern Africa, and rather than use custom-built and expensive packaging, he purchased a number of second-hand plastic pallet boxes for this purpose. As an additional bonus, he quickly sold the empty boxes at the other end for almost as much as he paid for them!

Team Member Meets HRH The Earl of Wessex

It was a proud day for PPS’ Andy Flynn recently as he was introduced to HRH The Earl of Wessex at St. James’s Palace in London.

Sqn Ldr Andy Flynn was invited as a VIP Guest to a DofE Gold Award presentation ceremony. Sqn Ldr Flynn is the Wing DofE Officer and also the Region DofE Officer for Central & East Region, a dual role which he is finding very rewarding and enjoyable.

Andy is also Operations & Logistics Manager for PPS Equipment Management Ltd at Measham where he is responsible for the smooth running of an industrial wash site. PPS specializes in the management of returnable transit equipment – this largely consists of plastic crates and plastic pallets used within the food industry. Due to the nature of the products being moved around the country, all the plastic crates and pallets must be washed after each use. Andy was instrumental in developing the Enable online asset tracking system used to locate and retrieve used equipment. PPS installed state-of-the-art wash equipment at the Measham site which has recently been awarded ISO 2200:2005 accreditation.

Increased demand for washing facilities has meant that PPS will add an extra shift to its production schedule in January 2009, creating eight new jobs in the area.

Rental of plastic boxes

Plastic pallets can now be rented from PPS Equipment Management Ltd out of its Midlands location. Renting plastic pallets is an alternative to timber pallets where a hygiene pallet is needed – for example within a food processing plant.

PPS will rent plastic pallets to clients on a contract basis and will also offer to wash plastic pallets on its dedicated pallet wash line. In addition PPS has installed an industrial crate wash line which can wash plastic food crates, nestable crates. This same wash line will also wash collapsible boxes and attached lid tote boxes.
