Plastic Pallets in the food industry

September 20th, 2008

For years there have been discussions within the food industry about the use of plastic pallets to transport and store a variety of foodstuffs.

It has always been acknowledged that plastic construction leads to a more hygienic pallet as it can be washed and sterilised, whereas timber pallets may be prone to splintering, distortion if left out in wet conditions and even microbiological viral infestation in certain cases.

PPS Equipment Management Ltd has for years been extolling the virtues of plastic pallets, particularly when food is likely to come in some contact with the pallet surface.

There is, PPS accepts, a higher initial price for plastic pallets versus timber – however, any such price deferential is more than compensated by the fact that a typical timber pallet will require ongoing repairs from around its third trip, PPS has some pallets within their own pallet pool that are fully functional after 5 years and hundreds of delivery trips.

There is no such thing as a cheap plastic pallet, but PPS have now introduced a very cost-effective 1200 x 1000mm plastic pallets aimed at those who would like to convert to plastic but for whom cost in the past outweighed hygiene considerations. The new pallets will either be for sale or available on a rental contract from PPS.
